สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทยมอบทุนการศึกษาของรัฐบาลญี่ปุ่นให้แก่ผู้ที่มีความประสงค์ไปศึกษาต่อที่ญี่ปุ่นในระดับอุดมศึกษา และในสถานศึกษาระดับสูงของญี่ปุ่น รวมทั้งสิ้น 7 ประเภท ซึ่งมีรายละเอียดโดยย่อดังต่อไปนี้
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทย คัดเลือกนักเรียนไทยเพื่อไปศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาตรีที่มหาวิทยาลัยที่ญี่ปุ่น เป็นประจำทุกปี ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุครบ 17 ปีบริบูรณ์ และไม่เกิน 21 ปี สำเร็จหรือกำลังจะสำเร็จการศึกษาในระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย และจบการศึกษาในเดือนมีนาคม ของปีที่เริ่มรับทุนการศึกษา ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 5 ปี และ 7 ปี สำหรับสาขาแพทยศาสตร์ ทันตแพทยศาสตร์ สัตวแพทยศาสตร์ (รวมระยะเวลาศึกษาภาษาญี่ปุ่น 1 ปี) รับสมัครประมาณต้นเดือนมิถุนายนของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายน ของปีถัดไป
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทย คัดเลือกนักเรียนไทยเพื่อไปศึกษาในระดับนักศึกษาวิจัย ที่มหาวิทยาลัยที่ญี่ปุ่นเป็นประจำทุกปี ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุไม่เกิน 35 ปี สำเร็จหรือกำลังจะสำเร็จการศึกษาในระดับปริญญาตรี ในปีที่เริ่มรับทุนการศึกษา ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 2 ปี หรือ 1 ปี 6 เดือน (รวมเรียนภาษาญี่ปุ่น 6 เดือน) รับสมัครประมาณต้นเดือนมิถุนายนของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายน หรือ ตุลาคม ของปีถัดไป
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทยคัดเลือกนักศึกษาไทยเพื่อไปศึกษาที่มหาวิทยาลัยที่ญี่ปุ่น เพื่อเพิ่มพูนทักษะความรู้ภาษาญี่ปุ่น ศึกษาวัฒนธรรมและสภาพสังคมญี่ปุ่น เป็นประจำทุกปี ปีละประมาณ 6 ทุน (พ.ศ.2553) ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุครบ 18 ปีบริบูรณ์ และไม่เกิน 29 ปี กำลังศึกษาอยู่ชั้นปีที่ 2 หรือ 3 และศึกษาภาษาญี่ปุ่นเป็นวิชาเอกในระดับปริญญาตรี ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 1 ปีการศึกษา รับสมัครต้นเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนตุลาคมของปีเดียวกัน
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทย ด้วยความร่วมมือจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการไทย คัดเลือกครูในสังกัดกระทรวงศึกษาธิการเพื่อไปฝึกอบรมด้านการศึกษาที่มหาวิทยาลัยในญี่ปุ่น เป็นประจำทุกปี ปีละประมาณ 6 ทุน (พ.ศ.2553) ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุไม่เกิน 35 ปี สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี มีประสบการณ์ในวิชาชีพมาไม่น้อยกว่า 5 ปี และสอนในระดับประถมศึกษา มัธยมศึกษา หรือสอนในสถาบันพัฒนาอาชีพครู ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 1 ปี 6 เดือน (รวมระยะเวลาศึกษาภาษาญี่ปุ่น 6 เดือน) รับสมัครปลายเดือนมกราคมของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนตุลาคมของปีเดียวกัน
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทย ด้วยความร่วมมือจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการไทย คัดเลือกนักเรียนไทยเพื่อไปศึกษาในวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีที่ญี่ปุ่นเป็นประจำทุกปี ปีละประมาณ 3 ทุน (พ.ศ.2553) ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุครบ 17 ปีบริบูรณ์ และไม่เกิน 21 ปี เป็นนักเรียนที่กำลังศึกษาชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 และจะจบการศึกษาในเดือนมีนาคมของปีที่เริ่มรับทุนการศึกษา ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 4 ปี (รวมระยะเวลาศึกษาภาษาญี่ปุ่น 1 ปี) รับสมัครต้นเดือนกรกฎาคมของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายน ของปีถัดไป
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทย ด้วยความร่วมมือจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการไทย คัดเลือกนักเรียนไทยเพื่อไปศึกษาในสถาบันอาชีวะศึกษาที่ญี่ปุ่นเป็นประจำทุกปี ปีละประมาณ 1-2 ทุน (พ.ศ.2553) ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุครบ 17 ปีบริบูรณ์ และไม่เกิน 21 ปี เป็นนักเรียนที่กำลังศึกษาชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 และจะจบการศึกษาในเดือนมีนาคมของปีที่เริ่มรับทุนการศึกษา ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 3 ปี (รวมระยะเวลาศึกษาภาษาญี่ปุ่น 1 ปี) รับสมัครต้นเดือนกรกฎาคมของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายน ของปีถัดไป
สถานเอกอัครราชทูตญี่ปุ่นประจำประเทศไทย คัดเลือกข้าราชการสามัญ หรือผู้ทำงานในสังกัดหรือองค์กรที่เกี่ยวข้องในสาขาวิชานั้น และเป็นผู้ซึ่งจะมีบทบาทในการเป็นผู้นำในการพัฒนาประเทศไทย ไปศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาโท (หลักสูตรภาษาอังกฤษ) ที่สถาบันและมหาวิทยาลัยในญี่ปุ่น ระยะเวลารับทุนการศึกษา 1 ปี ทุนแบ่งออกเป็น 5 สาขาวิชาคือ 1. สาขาวิชารัฐประศาสนศาสตร์ 2. สาขาวิชาบริหารธุรกิจ 3. สาขาวิชานิติศาสตร์ 4. สาขาวิชาการบริหารทางแพทยศาสตร์ 5. สาขาวิชาการปกครองส่วนท้องถิ่น
ผู้สมัครต้องมีสัญชาติไทย อายุไม่เกิน 40 ปี (ไม่เกิน 35 ปีสำหรับสาขาวิชาบริหารธุรกิจ) จบการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรี มีประสบการณ์การทำงานในองค์กร หรือหน่วยงานของรัฐบาลมามากกว่า 3-5 ปี (คุณสมบัติแตกต่างไปตามสาขาที่สมัคร) ทั้งนี้ผู้สมัครต้องได้รับการเสนอชื่อจากหน่วยงานรัฐ หรือองค์กรที่สังกัดเท่านั้น ทุนเริ่มรับสมัครประมาณเดือนกันยายนของทุกปี และเริ่มรับทุนตั้งแต่เดือนตุลาคมของปีถัดไป
