เมื่อพูดถึงการเรียนการสอนเกี่ยวกับการสอนให้เด็กรู้จักการประหยัดทรัพยากร หรือสอนให้เด็ก ๆ รู้จักการรีไซเคิลนั้น คงเป็นอะไรที่น่าเบื่ออยู่มาก แต่ตอนนี้ ที่อังกฤษได้เปิดตัวหุ่นยนต์ Recycler ที่จะมาสอนเด็ก ๆ เกี่ยวกับการรีไซเคิล ให้กลายเป็นเรื่องสนุกและนำไปปฏิบัติได้จริง
Recycler เป็นหุ่นยนต์ที่จะสอนให้เด็กประถมทั่วอังกฤษ เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการรีไซเคิล 3 อย่าง คือ Reduce (ใช้น้อย) Reuse (ใช้ซ้ำ) และ Recycle (นำกลับมาใช้ใหม่) ซึ่งหุ่นยนต์รีไซเคิลนี้ เป็นผลงานการประดิษฐ์ของกลุ่ม Waste watch (เวสท์ วอช) องค์การการกุศลที่จัดตั้งขึ้นมาเพื่อกระตุ้นให้ประชาชนเล็งเห็นถึงความสำคัญ ของการรักษาความสะอาดบนโลกใบนี้ โดยหุ่นยนต์ มีราคาอยู่ที่ 64,000 ดอลลาร์ หรือราว 2 ล้านบาท และผลิตขึ้นมาเป็นพิเศษโดยกลุ่ม Foundation Robot ที่เมืองเบอร์มิ่งแฮม ประเทศอังกฤษ
ทั้งนี้ เจ้า Recycler จะถูกควบคุมด้วยรีโมทคอนโทรล ที่ซ่อนเอาไว้ในกระเป๋าของผู้ควบคุม เมื่อต้องการสั่งการหุ่นยนต์ สัญญาณจากรีโมทก็จะส่งไปยังสมองของหุ่น และแปลงออกมาเป็นคำพูด ท่าทาง สีหน้า และการเต้น ทั้งนี้ เวลาส่วนใหญ่ของ เจ้าหุ่น Recycler อุทิศให้กับการไปเยี่ยมเยียนโรงเรียนกว่า 8,000 แห่ง และพูดคุยกับเด็ก ๆ กว่า 1.5 ล้านคนทั่วเกาะอังกฤษ ซึ่งไม่ใช่เพียงแค่โรงเรียนเท่านั้น เจ้าหุ่นตัวนี้ยังได้เข้าร่วมงานเทศกาลและการประชุมต่าง ๆ อีกด้วย โดย การแสดงของ Recycler จะใช้เวลาทั้งเพียงแค่ 45 นาที ซึ่งมีทั้งการเล่าเรื่อง เกมตอบคำถาม การร้องเพลงไปพร้อม ๆ กับผู้ชม และการร้องแร็ปเป็นโชว์ปิดท้าย
นางสาว จูลี่ โรเบ็ค เจ้าหน้าที่ทางการศึกษา กล่าวว่า เจ้าหุ่นยนต์ Recycler มีความสำคัญต่อการกระตุ้นความสนใจในเรื่องการรักษาสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นอย่างมาก เธอคิดว่าเป็นเรื่องน่าตื่นเต้นที่เห็นอะไรบางอย่างในตัวของเด็ก และหวังว่า ความคิดเกี่ยวกับการอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อมจะอยู่กับเด็ก ๆ ตลอดไป และสารที่หุ่นยนต์รีไซเคิลส่งไปให้นั้น คงจะทำให้พวกเขามีส่วนช่วยพัฒนาสภาพแวดล้อมต่อไปในอนาคต
ขณะที่ เบ็ธ บัดเด็น อาจารย์สอนวิชาวิทยาศาตร์ที่ London’s John Ball School กล่าวว่า ตอนนี้ เด็ก ๆ ได้เข้ามามีส่วนร่วมกับเเคมเปญมากขึ้น และพวกเขาก็เข้าใจเกี่ยวกับเเนวคิดที่ว่า มีอะไรที่พวกเขาสามารถทำได้บ้าง มันไม่ใช่เรื่องสลับซับซ้อนสำหรับพวกเขา ซึ่งในที่สุด เด็ก ๆ ก็จะความรู้ที่ได้ไปปรับใช้และนำไปเล่าให้พ่อแม่ของพวกเขาฟังเกี่ยวกับการรี ไซเคิล ซึ่งตอนที่เธอชอบที่สุด คงเป็นตอนร้องเพลงเพราะมันสนุกมากจริง ๆ
ด้านหนูน้อย อีโลดี้ วัตสัน วัย 7 ปี ได้กล่าวถึงสิ่งที่เธอได้รับจากหุ่นยนต์ Recycler ว่า เธอจะนำถุงพลาสติกไปใช้เวลาที่เธอออกไปซื้อของ แทนที่จะขอถุงพลาสติกใบใหม่เพื่อใส่ของ
