โครงการพัฒนามาตรฐานแว่นตา 3 มิติครอบจักรวาลนี้มีชื่อเรียกอย่างเป็นทางการว่า Full HD 3D Glasses Initiative เป้าหมายหลักคือการสร้างมาตรฐานสำหรับแว่นตา 3 มิติชนิด active shutter ที่สามารถใช้งานได้กับชุดอุปกรณ์หน้าจอแสดงภาพ 3 มิติของผู้ผลิตหลายแบรนด์ในตลาด ต่างจากปัจจุบันที่ชุดอุปกรณ์ 3 มิติแต่ละแบรนด์จะต้องใช้แว่นเฉพาะแบรนด์เท่านั้น ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในข้อจำกัดหลักของการใช้งานทีวี 3 มิติในขณะนี้
ความร่วมมือครั้งนี้เกิดขึ้นบนแผนซึ่งบริษัท XPAND 3D เคยประกาศไว้เมื่อเดือนมี.ค.ปี 2010 ซึ่งระบุว่าการสร้างมาตรฐานหลักหรือ universal standard ให้กับแว่นตา 3 มิติชนิด active shutter ในตลาดจะทำให้ต้นทุนทั้งในแง่ของผู้บริโภคและผู้จำหน่ายลดลง บนความเชื่อว่าผู้บริโภคจะเลิกมองว่าแว่นตาคืออุปสรรคหลักในการซื้อทีวี 3 มิติเครื่องใหม่ ตามผลสำรวจที่บริษัทวิจัย NPD Group พบเมื่อเดือนก.ค.ที่ผ่านมา
แว่นตา 3 มิติชนิด active shutter มีหลักการทำงานต่างจากแว่นสีน้ำเงินแดงในอดีต โดยแว่นสีน้ำเงินแดงดั้งเดิมนั้นจะทำให้ตาแต่ละข้างของผู้ชมมองเห็นภาพที่มีมุมมองต่างกันในเวลาพร้อมกัน ซึ่งการซ้อนภาพสีน้ำเงินและแดงจะถูกแยกออกเป็น 2 ภาพเมื่อมีการมองผ่านแว่นตาน้ำเงิน-แดง
